History of the Team
Initially founded as a recreational team, it wasn’t until the 1970s that SV Grödig began to make a name for themselves in the Austrian football scene. They eventually worked their way up to the Austrian Regional League, the third-highest tier of football in the country.
The team continued to progress throughout the 1990s and 2000s, winning several regional titles and eventually earning promotion to the Austrian First League in 2008. Just two years later, they secured their place in the Austrian Bundesliga, the top tier of football in the country.
Despite overcoming significant odds to reach the top league, SV Grödig struggled to remain competitive among Austria’s elite teams. In 2015, they were relegated to the second league, where they have remained ever since.
Over the years, SV Grödig has seen a number of talented players take to the pitch in their blue and white stripes. However, perhaps most notably, the team briefly served as a launching pad for the career of Sadio Mané, who played for the team in 2012 before being sold to Red Bull Salzburg the following year.
Other notable players to don the SV Grödig kit include current Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan, Austrian national team player Konrad Laimer, and former Liverpool defender Kevin Stewart.
SV Grödig has had a number of coaches over the years, each bringing their own unique style and approach to the team. However, one of the most notable coaches in the team’s history is undoubtedly Peter Schöttel, who led the team to their Austrian Cup victory in 2014.
Most Successful Season
SV Grödig’s most successful season came in the 2013-2014 campaign, when they won the Austrian Cup after defeating SK Rapid Wien in the final. The team finished the season in 4th place in the Austrian Bundesliga, their highest-ever finish in the top tier.
The current owner of SV Grödig is Heinrich Schmitt, a successful businessman based in Salzburg. Under his ownership, the team has continued to work towards success both on and off the pitch.
SV Grödig’s home stadium is Das Goldberg Stadion, located in the heart of Grödig. The stadium has a capacity of around 4,000, making it one of the smaller venues in the Austrian Bundesliga.
While perhaps not one of the most well-known teams in Austrian football, SV Grödig has certainly had their share of memorable moments over the years. With a dedicated ownership group and talented players on the current roster, it’s clear that the team is committed to continuing to work towards success for years to come.
