Overview

Wuhan University is a national key university located in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China. It was founded in 1893 as Ziqiang Institute and later became Huazhong University in 1928. In 1949, the university was merged with other universities in the region and became Wuhan University, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines, including science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, law, economics, management, and medicine.

History

The history of Wuhan University dates back to the late Qing dynasty, when it was established as Ziqiang Institute in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, a prominent statesman and educational reformer of the time. The institute was renamed as Huazhong University in 1928, and it gradually expanded its scope and influence in the following decades. In 1949, the university was merged with other universities in the region and renamed Wuhan University.
