Overview
The University of Pittsburgh is a public research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. History
The University of Pittsburgh was founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy. It was renamed the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819, and in 1908, became the University of Pittsburgh. Over the years, the university has gone through many changes and expansions, including merging with the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967 to form what is now known as the Swanson School of Engineering.
