The university was formed in 2004 by the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. History

The University of Manchester has a rich history dating back to 1824 when the Manchester Mechanics’ Institute was founded. In 1992, the Victoria University merged with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) to form the University of Manchester.
