The university was formed in 2004 by the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of universities and is ranked 27th in the world and 6th in the UK by the QS World University Rankings 2022.

History

The University of Manchester has a rich history dating back to 1824 when the Manchester Mechanics’ Institute was founded. In 1851, the institute was renamed the Manchester Institute of Technology and in 1880, it was granted university status becoming the Victoria University. In 1955, the university established the Department of Computer Science which was the first such department in the UK. In 1992, the Victoria University merged with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) to form the University of Manchester.

The University of Manchester is organized into three faculties: Humanities, Science and Engineering, and Biology, Medicine, and Health. Each faculty is further divided into schools and research institutes.
