The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583 by a royal charter granted by King James VI of Scotland. The university’s founders were Robert Rollock, a Presbyterian minister, and James VI. At the time, the university was named Tounis College, and it initially had three faculties: Humanities, Law, and Theology. In the 18th century, the university became a major center of the Scottish Enlightenment, with figures such as Adam Smith, David Hume, and Sir Walter Scott associated with it.
