Overview

Northeastern University is a private research university located in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was founded in 1898 and currently enrolls over 27,000 undergraduate and graduate students. History

Northeastern University was founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men in Boston. In 1916, the school changed its name to Northeastern College and became a degree-granting institution. In 1922, Northeastern received accreditation from the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and in 1924 it awarded its first bachelor’s degree. The university continued to expand its academic offerings and research programs throughout the 20th century, becoming a leading institution in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

Northeastern also has campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina, Portland, Maine, Seattle, Washington, and Silicon Valley, California.

The university’s mascot is Paws, a husky. The Matthews Arena is the oldest surviving indoor ice hockey arena in the world, and hosts the Northeastern men’s and women’s ice hockey teams.
