Overview

New York University (NYU) is a private research university located in New York City. With a history dating back to 1831, NYU is considered one of the largest private universities in the United States. History

NYU was founded in 1831 as the University of the City of New York (UCNY). Originally located in a building on the corner of Houston Street and Broadway, UCNY was one of the first universities in the country to admit students based solely on academic merit. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the university expanded its programs, establishing a law school, a business school, and a medical school. In 1896, the university was officially renamed New York University.
