IQS was founded in 1905 by the Society of Jesus for the purpose of educating engineers in the developing industrial sector of Barcelona. In 1933, the school was renamed as the Higher Institute of Chemical Studies, and in the 1960s, the institution moved to its current location in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. In 1991, the school became a founding member of the Universitat Ramon Llull, along with other Jesuit institutions in Catalonia.
