History

Dartmouth College was founded by Eleazar Wheelock, a Congregational minister who decided to establish a school for Native Americans to educate them about Christianity and Western culture. The original name of the college was the “Moor’s Indian Charity School,” which was established in 1754. In 1769, Wheelock received a charter from King George III for “Dartmouth College” as a “school for the education and instruction of Youth of the Indian Tribes in this Land.”
