Igor Makarov was born on January 14, 1962, in Moscow, Russia. His parents were engineers, and his father worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Career and Achievements

After completing his education, Makarov started his career at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1988, he joined the government agency, Foreign Economic Association “Soyuznefteexport,” as a specialist in international relations. In 1991, he co-founded the business consultancy firm, Makarov and Partners, which advised foreign companies on doing business in Russia. During this time, Makarov became influential in the Russian business world and gained valuable insights into the country’s economy.

In 1995, Makarov founded Itera, a natural gas company that later became a major player in the Russian energy sector. Under his leadership, Itera expanded into telecommunications, oil refining, and electricity generation. By 2007, Itera was the third-largest independent gas producer in Russia, with a turnover of US$8.4 billion. In 2009, Makarov sold his stake in Itera and established the ARETI Group.

The ARETI Group is a diversified business conglomerate with interests in natural resources, energy, telecommunications, media, and sports. The group’s subsidiaries include ARETI International Group, which focuses on global commodities trading, and ARETI Capital Partners, which provides financing for infrastructure projects. The group’s media arm, RBC Group, is one of Russia’s leading media companies.

In addition to his business ventures, Makarov is involved in various philanthropic activities. He is the founder of the New Names program, which provides scholarships to talented young musicians in Russia. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Russian Olympic Committee and has contributed to the development of Russian sport.
