Hsu earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the National Taiwan University in 1971. He then went on to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained a master’s degree in chemical engineering in 1973.
Career and Achievements
After completing his studies at MIT, Hsu returned to Taiwan to work for Far Eastern Group. He started out working in the group’s petrochemicals division, and later became CEO of the group’s textile division.
Under Hsu’s leadership, Far Eastern Group has grown into a sprawling conglomerate with more than 80 subsidiaries and over 60,000 employees. The group’s holdings include petrochemicals, textiles, cement and real estate. The group is also involved in international trade, financial services and biotechnology.
Hsu has been recognized for his entrepreneurial achievements and contributions to Taiwan’s economy. He was inducted into the Order of Brilliance by the Taiwanese government in 2010.
Personal Life
Hsu is married to Chuang Ssu-chia, and they have one son and one daughter. In his spare time, Hsu enjoys golfing and fishing.
Hsu is also an active philanthropist. He has donated millions of dollars to charity, particularly in the areas of education and environmental conservation. He has set up several foundations to support these causes, including the Douglas Hsu Foundation and the Far Eastern Y.Z. Hsu Education Foundation.
