Early Life and Education
Yee was born in 1945 in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China. His family moved to Hong Kong when he was just a year old, where he grew up in a modest household. He attended Wah Yan College in Hong Kong before going to the United States to study civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Yee later earned his master’s degree in engineering from the University of Michigan.
Career and Achievements
After completing his studies, Yee returned to Hong Kong and began working for his family’s construction business. He went on to establish his own company, Hopewell Holdings, in 1972. The company initially focused on the construction of roads and bridges, but soon expanded into property development and infrastructure projects.
Yee’s most notable achievement at Hopewell Holdings was the construction of the Hopewell Centre. The 216-meter skyscraper was the tallest building in Hong Kong when it was completed in 1980. The company also built the Hopewell Highway Infrastructure, a major toll road in Guangdong province, China.
Under Yee’s leadership, Hopewell Holdings continued to diversify into other sectors. The company entered the hotel industry in the early 1990s, with the opening of the five-star Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. Hopewell Holdings also acquired a stake in Coastal Energy, an oil and gas exploration company with operations in Thailand and Malaysia.
